Modern Li-ion batteries undergo a multi-stage treatment:shredding, mechanical separation, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical flows, followed by selective recovery of cobalt, nickel, lithium, and manganese. A representative process yields significant recovery with reported cobalt extraction around 70–95% in optimized plants, depending on technology and feedstock composition.
Recycling facilities often target cathode materials (NMC, NCA) and anode graphite, while ensuring electrolyte containment and safety measures to prevent thermal events during processing.
